Today I’m incredibly proud to share that DMC Service has been named to the Inc. 5000 list for the fifth consecutive year. To give context, 1% of companies on the list make it five years in a row. If I’m being honest, this award means something very different to me than it did the first time. The first year felt like validation. The fifth year feels like gratitude.
Eleven years ago, I made one of the terrifying decisions of my life. I went all in on a vision that, on paper, didn’t make a lot of sense. There were plenty of people who questioned whether I belonged in this industry. But I believed in a different kind of company in the trades, one that led with culture first. Where employees could be proud of what they do every day and feel supported. Where true trust was built between us and our customers.
Building a business is lonely. There are nights when you’re staring at payroll wondering how you’re going to make everything work. There are jobs you lose that keep you awake, heck sometimes it’s the jobs you win that keep you up more. There are mistakes that feel enormous. There are moments when you’re carrying the weight of every employee and every customer on your shoulders. Betting on yourself sounds inspiring when you read it on a coffee mug. Living it is scary.
What kept me going wasn’t certainty. It was conviction. I believed that relationships mattered. I believed customers deserved a company that answered the phone, kept its promises, and treated their buildings as if they were our own. I believed you could build a successful company by putting people first. Over time, that belief attracted the right people.
Today, this recognition belongs far more to our team than it does to me. They are the ones answering emergency calls at two in the morning. They are the ones solving impossible problems in buildings and spaces in the middle of Kansas City summers and winters. They are the ones who show up every day with integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to taking care of our customers. No award captures that.
The Inc. 5000 measures growth. What I see is something even more meaningful. I see a team that trusts one another. Customers who continue to choose us. Relationships that have been built one handshake, one service call, and one promise kept at a time.
I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. To our employees: thank you for believing in this vision and making it better than I ever imagined. To our customers: thank you for trusting us with your facilities, your businesses, and your confidence year after year.
And to anyone standing on the edge of a decision that scares you, wondering whether you should bet on yourself... I can’t promise it will be easy. In fact, I can almost guarantee it won’t be. But sometimes the biggest risk isn’t betting on yourself. It’s never finding out what you were capable of building.
